This activity involves assessing whether people pronounce pairs of words such that they rhyme or not. The answer tends to differ dependent upon where the person is from (this might mean different countries, or regions/cities/towns, or neighbourhoods), or how old the respondent is, or perhaps even their gender.
This activity is intended for older students: students who can read and write and who can collect and note responses from others. It will guide them to think about their own pronunciation (and to think about their own pronunciation independently of how words are spelled), to recruit ‘research subjects’ and ask them to think about their pronunciation, to collect data on ‘introspective intuitions’, and to summarize their findings.
